Description:

Northern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. Composed of a thick bronze wire scored to appear twisted, this is a large torc (torq, torque) whose terminals are wrapped in bronze wire that then twists into a hook on one end and what was presumably once a loop on the other for clasping. This is a beautiful piece of jewelry that would have signified wealth and high social status for its wearer, who may have been a man or a woman in Viking society. The torc likely ended its functional life deposited in a river or lake, probably as an offering to the gods, or perhaps was worn into the grave. Size: 7.5" W (19 cm)
