Description:

Northern Europe, Anglo-Saxon or possibly other Germanic culture, ca. 7th to 9th century CE. An interesting forged-iron oil-burning lamp with an openwork topside, a boat-shaped body, a pierced tab handle, and a slightly-narrowed wick spout. Lamps like this example would be filled with naturally-occurring oils or liquified animal tallow and have a thick wick placed inside to soak up the combustible substance. Once sufficiently saturated, the end of the wick would be lit to provide light for its owner. Size: 4.2" L x 2.7" W x 2" H (10.7 cm x 6.9 cm x 5.1 cm).
