Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Valdivian, ca. 3rd millennium BCE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery bust of a female 'Venus' figure with russet-hued pigment adorning her lower body. Her feminine form is defined by protruding shoulders, perky breasts, sinuous arms meeting in front of her womb, and a wide neck. Her buffware head exhibits incised eyes, brows, and lips, a bulging nose, and smooth cheeks, all beneath an enormous coiffure replete with dozens of thinly incised striations. Size: 1.6" W x 2.875" H (4.1 cm x 7.3 cm); 3.75" H (9.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: This is a fragment of a larger figure. Head reattached to neck line, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break line. Light abrasions to lower body and head, with softening to some finer details, and light fading to red pigmentation on lower body. Light earthen deposits throughout. Lower body attached to display stand with Velcro pad on bottom of stand.
