Thailand, late Sukhothai period, ca. 16th century CE. This is a fascinating wooden carving of a Buddha, lacquered and then gilded. It is carved from a single piece of wood and has square stand also carved below the feet, as if made to be placed into a larger column or niche. The Buddha is standing with hands at his sides, palms facing towards the body, a very rare mudra. A Thai monk told a friend of the gallery that this was the "listening Buddha" pose. Robert Thurman has written, "Buddha images are like Buddhas themselves in a very real sense - as art emanation bodies - because they have the power to transform." This particular Buddha, with his serene face and timeless look, stands ready to listen. Size: 4.4" W x 16.85" H (11.2 cm x 42.8 cm)
