Description:

Ancient Near East, Sumeria, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A large, marbled stone cylinder seal with deeply incised designs. Rolled out, it reveals two large ibexes running past a tree. The iconography of the ibex is seen over and over again, replicated in gold, bronze, and stone, in the ancient Near East and artwork by their neighbors in central Asia. The ibex seems to have symbolized virility, and by extension health, strength, and power. Hunting scenes were also popular signs of the leisure activities of Sumerian elites, and the two ibexes running here may be part of the hunt. Comes with custom stand containing rollout of seal. Size: 1.4" W x 1.5" H (3.6 cm x 3.8 cm); size of seal: 7.5" W x 2.65" H (19 cm x 6.7 cm)
