Description:

Central Asia, Indus Valley, Harappan/Mohenjo-Daro civilization, ca. 2700 to 2000 BCE. A stunning example of some of the earliest decorated pottery in central Asia. This is a tall, cylindrical vessel that tapers at the waist to a flat, round foot. The body and interior are painted with black on red motifs that are dense on the exterior. In two registers are highly stylized zebu bulls, a species impressive for its wide, curving horns, and impressive dewlap, both depicted here over a background of foliage with delightfully rendered individual leaves. The humped zebu bull was a recurring theme on the decorative and ritual arts from this civilization, probably symbolizing the leader of the herd, known for strength and virility. Size: 6.5" W x 7.45" H (16.5 cm x 18.9 cm)
