Description:

Cyprus, Iron Age, ca. 750 BCE. An exemplar of Greek Cypriot pottery that preceded the emergence of Classical Greek pottery, with an ovoid body, conical neck, and sizeable strap handle bridging shoulder to neck. Each end is adorned with a target motif -concentric black on buff circles - with nipple-like projections in the centers, grand bands of black striations encircling the vessel and flanking the neck. Most intriguing are two schematized fish motifs nestled within these bands. Additional striations and zigzags adorn the neck, handle, and spout. Size: 10.25" L x 11.25" H (26 cm x 28.6 cm)

Among the finest examples of Cypriot pottery we have handled, and a very unique jug form with fascinating fish iconography in addition to the target motifs characteristic of Cypriot wares.
