Eastern Greek, Late Geometric Period, ca. 900 to 700 BCE. A superb example of pottery from the Geometric period - expertly turned, decorated, and fired - displaying mastery of the medium - the skyphos form presenting a rounded body with subtly undulating walls, flanked by a pair of sinuous handles. The painted decorative program is particularly impressive with the interior painted with concentric circles and an upper band of meandering circular motifs, the exterior covered with a mesmerizing variety of geometric motifs. Size: 8.375" W x 3.5" H (21.3 cm x 8.9 cm)
During the Geometric period, pottery was distinguished by ornately decorated surfaces as we see in this example. As time went on, artists of the Geometric period began to include stylized human and animal figures on their wares. The strict adherence to abstract geometric motifs on this piece leads us to believe it if from the early Geometric Period. A wonderful example from the era when both the literary (the era of Homer's the Iliad and the Odyssey) and visual arts flourished.
