Description:

Russia, School of Moscow style, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. Two large Russian icons probably used as part of a portable iconostasis in a church or monastery. Both were expertly painted with egg tempera beneath many layers of lacquer/glaze on long, rectangular wood panels. One panel depicts the Prophet Solomon, son of David and Bathsheba and the third king of a united Israel, wearing an ornate crown and regal vestments. This prophet was praised for his wisdom and taste for luxury. King Solomon's reign saw the construction of the Temple of Jerusalem. The other panel depicts at saint, perhaps from a Deesis Cycle. The Deesis is a traditional representation of Christ in Majesty or the Pantocrator Christ flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist, other saints, and angels. Saint John and the Virgin Mary (Theotokos) are typically shown looking toward Christ with their hands raised in supplication on behalf of all of humanity. We deem this to be a particularly old icon due to the use of natural materials and consequently a limited color palette. Russian artists favored colors comprised of bright red cinnabar, lapis lazuli, ochre, earth greens, malachite, cochineal indigo, and black charcoal. On top of these layers of tempera paint and sometimes gold, artists laid translucent glazed colors prepared with linseed oil and lacquer varnishes. By the 17th century, painting techniques became particularly complex as artists aimed to attain intricate effects. Marvelous examples displaying wonderful artistry and technique. Size: each measures approximately 12.75" W x 31.5" H (32.4 cm x 80 cm)
