Pre-Columbian Mayan Territories, El Salvador / Honduras, Late Classic Period ca. 550 to 900 CE. A Mayan Copador polychrome olla of a rounded form with corsetted upper walls resolving to an open rim, finely painted on the exterior with four elaborately dressed seated casiques and/or scribes occupying the lower register superimposed by an upper register of glyphs that resemble Mayan deities, possibly Akan and Chahk, all in hues of red, orange, and black upon a cream ground. The interior is painted with a register of stylized glyphs and a sunburst motif on the tondo in hues of red, orange, and black on a cream ground, each region framed with red and black bands. Size: 9.5" W x 4.25" H (24.1 cm x 10.8 cm)
