Description:

Pre-Columbian, Guatemala, Maya, Classic period, ca. 500 to 700 CE. A Mayan blackware vessel finely carved in bas relief, featuring a dynamic depiction of Mayan God L, a primary deity whose glyph name appers in the Dresden Codex and is described in the Popol Vuh Twin myth as one of the main lords of the Underworld (Xibalba) with both attributes of wealth and war. He is a god of advanced age, among the 'Mam' or Grandfather deities. Here we see his expressive visage in profile comprised of a bold, round open eye, pointy nose, jaguar-like traits particularly the ears, closed toothless mouth, and jutting chin, donning a flat, wide-brimmed, feathery hat topped by an abstract perhaps owl form, a cape or jaguar mantle, and beads around his neck, with a crouching form as if in a ritualistic stance. The best known representation of God L in upon Palenque's Temple of the Cross (doorjamb of inner sanctuary). Size: 4.125" in diameter x 4" H (10.5 cm x 10.2 cm)
