Description:

Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Moche, ca. 300 to 600 CE. Large and quite vivid pottery jar in the form of a human - possibly a representation of their chief god Ai Apec. Head, face, and ears act as spout for the vessel with rounded nodes representing shoulders and perhaps elbows. He wears a long strap around his neck with snake heads at each end. Over each shoulder and ending at his bulbous midsection he wears a belt with feline heads at each end. His long hair flows to the back of the vessel with each row ending in another serpentine head. A very interesting piece of Moche art! Size: 10.75" W x 13.75" H (27.3 cm x 34.9 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
