Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. This kneeling or sitting shaft tomb, female figure strikes a classic pose with her left hand behind her characteristically elongated head and her right hand outstretched. Her sole garments include a tightly-fitted headdress and skirt; her naked chest reveals ample breasts emphasizing her fertility. Nicely delineated fingers; note the nailbed detailing. What's most wondrous is her expressive visage; the artistry and skill of the sculptor brings this figure to life with those huge coffee bean shaped eyes, long and prominent nose, full lips, and exagerratedly large earlobes. The ancient artisan further embellished and highlighted the form and details by applying white and red slip. Nice manganese deposits on surface reveal how this lady has withstood the tests of time. Size: 14-1/2"H x 8-3/8" at widest point (36.8 cm x 21.2 cm).
