Description:

Pre-Columbian, Jalisco, West Mexico, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a large, hollow terracotta standing figure with an elaborate head ornament and a loincloth. There are applique marks on the shoulders that could be taken to be scarification or some kind of armor. The surface is a beautiful burnished red with cream highlights, all of which are very clear. The arms are truncated, which is a fairly common style for these figures. There are many fine mineral deposits on the surface of the object and the wide, staring eyes are haunting. This is in the Ameca style, and looks very similar to one held by the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia. Figures like these were placed inside of the shaft tombs that were sunk many feet below households, where generations of kin were interred to live beneath their family home. Size: 9.5" W x 17.5" H (24.1 cm x 44.4 cm).
