Description:

Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A fine example of an abstract standing axe god figure, hand-carved from mottled grey-green stone, of a stout form standing atop nubbin-shaped feet. Lengthy string-cut grooves create the delineations between the legs, arms, and neck, and the rounded body features smooth surface textures. The broad head has deep eye grooves, puffy cheeks, a wide mouth, and a tapered forehead, and red-painted decorative spots adorn both sides of this intriguing anthropomorphic figure. Size: 3.7" W x 6.8" H (9.4 cm x 17.3 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection, acquired via descent from father, collection amassed between the 1950s and 1990s
