Greece, colonies in Asia Minor, Ionia, ca. 6th century BCE. A striking, wheel-thrown bi-chrome terracotta vessel, its form comprised of a deep bowl with twin horizontal loop handles, a small, pronounced foot, and a rolled rim. The interior and rim are painted a rich black hue, while the exterior is decorated with a central black band. Simple yet elegant, from one of the most significant centers of the Greek world! In fact, during the 6th century BCE, Ionia was known for its intellectual prowess, and this period was dubbed the "Ionian awakening" as scholars understood it as the initial phase of the Greek classical world.
