Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 360 to 320 BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery vessel known as a guttus (or guttos, an oil-lamp-filling vessel) with a rounded body, a single loop handle, and a projecting spout with a funnel mouth, all atop a raised, tiered foot. The body is ringed along the periphery with dozens of thin ribs, and atop the body is the face of an elegant female in relief. The entire vessel - save for the area beneath the foot and beneath the body - is covered in lustrous jet-black glaze that imbue it with an attractive presentation. A fabulous example of utilitarian Campanian artistry! Size: 5.3" W x 6.125" H (13.5 cm x 15.6 cm).
