Description:

Greece, Classical period, ca. 450 to 425 BCE. A breathtaking leaded bronze statue of a nude athlete, hollow-cast at a remarkable scale of over one foot tall! Standing contrapposto, the youthful figure turns his head gently right, his coiffure neatly arranged in a crown of curls surmounting an idealized visage, comprised of a fine brow line, almond-shaped eyes, a naturalistic nose, and closed lips. His dynamic pose highlights his slender yet muscular physique, a quality that would have been further underscored by his previously outstretched arms, presumably extended to make an offering. At the sites of their victories and in their home cities, champion athletes were often honored with such sculptures, glorifying the strength and beauty of the male form. Size: 3.4" L x 4.3" W x 15.6" H (8.6 cm x 10.9 cm x 39.6 cm); 21.25" H (54 cm) on included custom stand.

Greek art inspired Etruscan sculpture and the human form, the standing Kuros, the spear throwing warrior and the idealized athlete such as this example are all derived from Greek prototypes. This powerful form is no doubt an inspiration to the athleticism needed for the competition of the Olympic games.
