Description:

Ancient Greece, Athens, ca. late 6th to early 5th century BCE. A graceful pottery lekythos adorned with black figure decoration of a horseman flanked by two attacking warriors. The dramatic scene show the left-most soldier lunging forward as he grasps a shield and pierces the horseman with his spear, while the right-most figure dynamically strides right and turns his body left to strike the head of the horse. Dashed thunderbolts flow through the scene, and tongues and rays envelop the vessel's shoulder. Size: 2.8" W x 6.9" H (7.1 cm x 17.5 cm)

Lekythoi were used for storing oil used for a wide variety of purposes in the Classical World. While larger examples were usually designated for keeping olive oil, smaller more delicate examples were reserved for the bath to store precious unguents of sweet and floral aromas. Given the tall aspect of this piece, it was likely used to store olive oil for special gatherings.

See Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, accession number 2018-50-58 and Beazley Archive Vase Numbers 361096 and 361097 for similarly decorated lekythoi with a horseman between warriors, all in the Agora Museum, Athens and attributed to the Group of the Agora Painter 24340.

This vase was exhibited at the Amarillo Arts Center in Amarillo, Texas, USA from January 12th to February 24th, 1991.
