Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A lovely and massive textile fragment composed of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in a creamy white color. The colorful illustrations are brought forth with applied pigments in red, green, orange, white, blue, and brown hues. The top panel depicts six abstract feline figures with anthropomorphic heads, and below are twelve panels depicting highly-stylized human, avian, and simian figures. Mounted within a fabric-lined frame. Size (textile): 41.5" W x 19.625" H (105.4 cm x 49.8 cm); size (frame): 42.2" W x 20.375" H (107.2 cm x 51.8 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
