Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A nicely-preserved weaver's basket composed of tightly-woven reeds and filled with the original implements employed by Chancay artisans. The accompanying tools include 2 small pottery jars; 2 woven textile pouches with cream-hued bodies and abstract crimson-hued decorations; a carved gourd bowl; 2 balls of thread, one beige in color and the other white; 18 slender wooden sewing needles; 2 wooden needles with wrapped thread; 3 wooden needles with pottery spindle whorls; 5 wooden needles with both thread and pottery spindle whorls; and 6 loose pottery spindle whorls. Size (basket): 5.5" L x 13.5" W x 3" H (14 cm x 34.3 cm x 7.6 cm).

  • Condition: Basket has slight bending to overall form, small losses to base and lid, and loosening to some reed fibers. Small chips and losses to some wooden needles, pottery spindle whorls, and pottery jars, and light fraying to textile pouches. Light earthen deposits throughout.
