Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-carved wooden litter post topped by a finial of a standing lord. He wears an intricate headdress and a tunic with carved linear and circular motifs. He holds his arms tightly against his sides and stands with delineated legs atop a tiered, hourglass-shaped platform. The rest of the post is of an uncomplicated rectangular form with five square mortises for attachment to a litter. Litters were utilized to transport royalty and other members of nobility, and in funerary processions four men would carry a symbolic empty litter representative of the deceased. Size: 2.375" W x 30" H (6 cm x 76.2 cm); 31.375" H (79.7 cm) on included custom stand.
