Description:

North America, Southern United States, Oklahoma, Tulsa River, Pliocene to Pleistocene period, ca. 1.5 million to 10,000 years ago. A wonderfully preserved fossilized lower jawbone from a mammoth with a molar intact and a substantial portion of the bone is present. This is probably a Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi), as this jaw was discovered in the Tulsa River. Mammoths had four functional molar teeth at a time - 2 in the lower and 2 in the upper jaw; the size, number of ridges, and other morphology can help determine the animal's age at death, health, and species. The organic composition of the bone and teeth have been replaced in the fossilization process creating a rich, deep brown color which develops over thousands of years of exposure to soil / water which contain the minerals and chemicals that can intensify its brown hue. Size of jaw: 15" L x 17" W x 7" H (38.1 cm x 43.2 cm x 17.8 cm); molar: 5.5" L x 2.25" W (14 cm x 5.7 cm)
