Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-carved funerary mask meant to attach to a larger mummy bundle. The plank-form mask is painted with a broad red face accented with white, diamond-shaped eyes, a rectangular mouth, and a prominent nose. The top of the head is perforated for strings to tighten the textile headpiece to the wooden composition. Size: 2" L x 9.5" W x 16" H (5.1 cm x 24.1 cm x 40.6 cm); 23.25" H (59.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
