Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes culture, ca. 1100 to 1450 CE. A sizable stone mortar of utilitarian form with a deep basin. The surfaces of the basin are incredibly smooth, suggesting repeated usage, and the hefty form indicates it was meant for pulverizing rather hard materials in large volumes.
