Description:

Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 10th to 14th century CE. A large, beautiful iron processional cross of the pommee style, with flaring arms that terminate in small balls made of 95% silver. Four additional silver bosses are applied on the faces of the arms. The cross is otherwise unadorned aside from a repousse bronze disc applied to the center, bearing a motif of two doves. In Christian art, doves are symbols of love and the Holy Spirit. The cross stands atop an integrated bronze conical socket of simple form, made to be placed on a pole and carried. Size: 18" W x 23.75" H (45.7 cm x 60.3 cm); 24.5" H (62.2 cm) on included custom stand.
