Description:

East Asia, Japan, Edo to Meiji period, ca. 19th century CE. A fine iron bell of spherical form known as a suzu with a horizontal raised band at its midsection where its two halves were welded together as well as an interior clapper allowing it to produce lovely music when shook. Sitting upon a flat base, the exterior of the antique instrument is adorned with a gorgeous abstract motif of geometric and vegetal designs. A loop with a circular, petaloid base projects from the top of the vessel and is tied with an iron wire, allowing the bell to be suspended. Large suzu bells, such as this example, are used at Shinto shrine entrances. It is said that ringing a suzu bell calls kami, or spirits, that allow one to acquire apotropaic powers. Size: 9" W x 10" H (22.9 cm x 25.4 cm)
