Description:

Native American, North America, New Mexico, ca. 1920 CE. A bold and beautiful Santo Domingo polychrome twin handled and rimmed pitcher with a lovely painted iconographical program featuring a pair of profiled birds painted in red and black on a cream ground on each side positioned with their heads toward the spouts and a large, open petaled flower painted black on cream beneath each spout. The Santo Domingo pueblo is located between Santa Fe and Albuquerque. It is among the larger Northern pueblos and its pottery is distinguished by buff colored clay, an overall cream-slipped ground with dark black floral, fauna, and geometric designs. Because the clay of this area is quite elastic, the Santo Domingo potters have traditionally been able to create large ollas, dough bowls, and storage vessels. Geometric design programs are most common. Elaborate bird motifs and polychrome designs like we see in this example are less common. Size: 11" deep x 11.5" W x 8.75" H (27.9 cm x 29.2 cm x 22.2 cm)
