Description:

Western Europe, Germany, 16th to 18th century CE. This is a massive, intimating steel axe which was probably used in warfare. The blade is long and slightly curved with a cylindrical socket that projects from the side. The large flared shape inspired the stylistic name "goosewing" because it looks like an outstretched bird wing. Incised curvilinear motifs decorate one side of the blade. An armorers' mark: "TW" is stamped close to the socket. A thick patina covers the blade. Looking at this blade and touching the cutting edge inspires full body chills - just thinking about its purpose and the pain it would have caused! Size: 26.5" L x 8" W (67.3 cm x 20.3 cm)
