Description:

**First Time At Auction**

East Asia, Korea, Silla Dynasty, ca. 668 to 935 CE. A pretty grayware vessel with an elongated or drum shaped body, and a short neck with a slightly flared rim. The body is rounded with incised lines across the surface. Aside from Chinese stoneware, Korean stoneware is the oldest known high-fired ware in the world - to make it, Korean artisans had to generate kiln temperatures greater than 1000 C! The characteristic grey color of this vessel and others like it is caused by the reduction of oxygen in the kiln's inner chamber. A remarkably well-preserved vessel of early Korean history! Size: 10" L x 5.5" W x 7.5" H (25.4 cm x 14 cm x 19 cm)
