Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden puppet head from the Wayang golek puppetry theater tradition depicting a male character with a grotesque pink face. The neck would have probably been attached to a wood and cloth marionette body; the limb movements controlled by rods. Wayang golek is a traditional Indonesian puppetry art form using three-dimensional wooden puppets. It originated in West Java and typically involves storytelling, often based on ancient epics or local folklore. Size: 9" L x 5" W x 14" H (22.9 cm x 12.7 cm x 35.6 cm); 20.5" H (52.1 cm) included custom stand.
