Description:

Japan, late 19th/early 20th century CE. This is a pair of complementary objects -- a wooden mask and a woodblock print. The mask, painted with red, black, and gold, depicts a tengu, a supernatural being in Japanese folk religion. The face has an exaggerated nose, wide eyes, and gold teeth with sharp canines. The tengu was originally given a beak, but that has evolved into the long nose seen here, which is one of its defining characteristics in art. When this mask was made and still today, tengu are thought of as protective but wild spirits of forests and mountains. The woodblock print shows a man with a very long nose and a child, painted in bright primary colors, with a signature in Japanese in the upper right corner. Size of mask: 6" W x 7.5" H (15.2 cm x 19 cm). Size of woodblock in frame: 11" W x 10.5" H (27.9 cm x 26.7 cm)
