Description:

Indonesia, Bali, 20th century CE. This is an incredibly striking thin wood mask with enormous eyes, mouth, and nostrils. The head has applied facial hair, mustache, and eyebrows, and wears an expression that can best be described as manic joy -- picture a cartoon character seeing their heart's desire and preparing to make a dash for it. He also has a bindi with a green stone and lines perhaps meant to represent wrinkles, although the face overall has a youthful appearance. Size: 8" H (20.3 cm)

Exhibited: Mexican Masks of the 20th Century: A Living Tradition; Morris Museum; Morristown NJ.

Provenance: Ex- New York Gallery, The Tryworks Collection compiled by the Rev. Richard and Jean Kellaway of Fairhaven, MA.
