East Asia, Japan, Taisho period, 1912 to 1926. A wooden hibachi (possibly Paulownia Wood), finely carved into a cylindrical form with a smooth rounded rim and base, beautifully adorned with birds and foliage delineated with inlays of mother of pearl as well as golden and silvery inlays created via the Maki-e technique, a Japanese wood lacquerware technique that uses gold or silver powder. The interior bowl is made of copper. A very special example! Size: 14.5" in diameter x 9.125" H (36.8 cm x 23.2 cm)

  • Condition: Some losses to mother of pearl and Maki-e inlays as shown. A few nicks and abrasions to the wooden surround. Copper insert shows normal age wear and has developed a lovely blue-green patina over time.
