East Asia, Japan, Showa period, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A hand-carved hippopotamus ivory tooth okimono depicting a family of pandas eating bamboo, their eyes inlaid with shiny black glass. The root-end cross-section is signed in Japanese characters in red ink. The carving is mounted on a custom wooden display base. Pandas, synonymous with China and not native to Japan, have become a popular motif in Japanese art. Their charm aligns perfectly with Japan's kawaii (cute) aesthetic, and they are often stylized to appear playful and whimsical - as seen here.
