East Asia, Japan, Showa era, mid-20th century CE. A hippopotamus ivory and resin okimono depicting a sage and two young boys (karako) in a sampan-style boat, with the man propelling them using a bamboo pole and fish emerging from the waves. The boat and figures are carved from several pieces of tusk, and the waves are molded resin. This motif of an elderly oarsman with two karako, featuring the distinctive Tang-era hairstyle of shaved head and hair tuft, is a common symbol in Japanese art, representing childhood innocence and joy. Mounted on a custom wooden base. Size: 5.5" L x 1.5" W x 3" H (14 cm x 3.8 cm x 7.6 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.
