Description:

East Asia, Japan, late Edo to early Meiji era, ca. 19th century CE. A wooden merchant's storage chest, known as a "tansu," used for safeguarding money and valuable goods. The chest features a lid that opens via an iron push-button mechanism. On the side, there are three drawers, with the bottom drawer secured by an iron lock plate and handle. Tansu chests were common in both homes and shops during this era, serving as essential storage for valuables. This particular tansu shows signs of heavy wear, with remnants of paper affixed to the interior of the lid, some of which bear black ink characters. The piece would benefit from restoration.
