Description:

East Asia, Japan, late Edo to Meiji era, ca. 19th century CE. This exquisite copper mirror, partially coated with tin and polished to a reflective surface, features a decorative verso adorned with a raised plant motif and a column of Japanese character script. The emblem, likely representing stylized ginger buds, appears to be a mon, a family or clan crest, which historically signified social status and lineage. Mon crests were used to identify noble families, warriors, and institutions, and often appeared on personal items like clothing, furniture, armor, and accessories. The handle is wrapped in textile and further reinforced with wrapped bamboo or wicker fiber. The mirror is housed in what may be the original antique wooden case. Size of mirror: 11.2" L x 7" Diameter (28.4 cm x 17.8 cm); case: 12.25" L x 8" W x 1" H (31.1 cm x 20.3 cm x 2.5 cm)
