Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (also Jama Coaque) culture, ca. 500 CE. A hand-built pottery female figure adorned with vibrant areas of orange, orange-red, and blue-green powder pigment. The seated woman leans forward in an intent manner, wears a necklace with a slender medallion above a lengthy tunic adorned with ovoid 'shell' halves, and grasps a pair of conical implements - perhaps pestles or ceremonial celts - in her hands. Her amicable face is composed with semicircular eyes, a ring piercing her septum, discoid ear spools, and a petite labret piercing, and her head is surmounted by an enormous hat, replete with several draped leaves. Size: 2.875" W x 5.6" H (7.3 cm x 14.2 cm)

  • Condition: Repairs to three small areas of headdress, with restoration to right leg, and resurfacing with overpainting along new material and break lines. Light encrustations, and nicks and abrasions to head, headdress, body, and limbs. Nice remains of original pigment throughout.
