Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque, ca. 500 CE. A touching, hand-built terracotta maternal scene featuring a woman holding a baby in her arms across her lap, while another child in a carrier clings to her back, secured by a strap. The mother is elaborately decorated, wearing a prominent headdress/coiffure, ear and nose ornaments, the straps of her baby carrier crossing her chest, and a skirt. She sits upon a hemispheric, flat bench with a railing support. Two birds perch upon the arms of the bench, singing sweet songs to the familial gathering. Liberal remains of blue, red, and yellow pigment still grace the figure's bodies, garments, and accoutrements. Size: 5.125" W x 5.5" H (13 cm x 14 cm)
