Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Ameca style, ca. 300 BCE - 300 CE. Jalisco figures are characterized by expressionistic, active forms. This figure is no exception. She has one knee drawn up and the other folded behind it in coquette fashion, a position that shows her in action. Her left hand is positioned behind her head, while the right extends outward from her body. Her face is just as expressive; note her open mouth with both top and bottom teeth delineated and her wide-eyed look. With a bare-breasted upper torso painted in red-brown, she wears a long cream-colored skirt that resembles a sarong. The form is a burnished red-orange slip with light cream painted slip decoration. The contrast between the naturalistic and the exaggerated is at its peak in this figure. On the one hand the anatomy of her fingers is remarkable - knuckles, nail beds, etc. On the other her rope-like limbs and elongated head display a penchant for stylization and abstraction. ~11-1/4"T x 7"W x 7"D
