Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A seated bichrome sheepface figure holding the long sinuous pipe of a bong to his/her mouth, with a visage comprised of an extremely pointed and protruding nose, recessed and painted ovoid eyes, pointed/hornlike ears, all topped by a tall banded headdress with an applied, dotted band above an applied fringe of bangs. The figure wears a single shoulder strapped dotted garment, gloves, large ear ornaments, and a beaded necklace, all in white on a red ground. Certainly a well-dressed smoker, this highly decorated state suggesting the elite status of a shaman or lord. Size: 4" W x 7.75" H (10.2 cm x 19.7 cm)

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
