Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A standing brownware pottery dog effigy vessel of a dramatically emaciated form with exposed ribs and expressive facial features as well as a splayed rim atop the back. While most collectors of Pre-Columbian pottery are familiar with puppies coming from the Colima region, ceramic canines from Jalisco are relatively rare. This standing pottery dog hails from Jalisco and while similar to Colima dogs, there are distinct differences. It is comprised of hollow-molded brownware pottery, standing upon all fours with an upturned tail. The visage shows a characteristically elongated snout with strong defining lines and flaring nostrils that are somewhat pig-like (though no pigs existed in ancient Jalisco), a closed, incised mouth, coffee-bean shaped eyes, and wrinkles between those pronounced, concave ears. In excellent overall condition with fabulous root marks and elegant smoke clouds on the surface. Size: 9.75" L x 5.25" W x 6.375" H (24.8 cm x 13.3 cm x 16.2 cm)
