Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 200 BCE to 300 CE. An impressive polychrome seated figure, possibly a hunchback given his curved silhouette, with hands folded across his lap. His characteristically elongated face is meticulously decorated with black tattooing, face paint, or possibly a stylized rendering of facial hair. Beyond this, he presents an expressive visage to the world, comprised of a pronounced nose, coffee bean shaped eyes, and open mouth. His person is elaborately decorated with fanciful ear ornaments, headdress, triple-strand beaded pectoral, numerous armbands, and a loin cloth. Hunchbacks were regarded as important figures in the Pre-Columbian world as their deformities were interpreted as signs that these people were touched by the deities. A stunning example from this shaft-tomb culture of West Mexico in marvelous condition with so many finely painted details remaining. Size: 4.375" W x 5.25" H (11.1 cm x 13.3 cm)
