Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A charming anthropomorphic effigy vessel, the humanoid head forming the flared spout. The prominent ears / nose could serve as lugs to attach a lid or stopper over the rim. Note the ribbed surface of the globular body - with the orange-red slip, the vessel has the appearance of a pumpkin! This is likely a funerary vessel for burial in a shaft tomb and may have contained offerings or possessions for the deceased to take to the afterlife. Size: 7" Diameter x 10" H (17.8 cm x 25.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to September 16, 2009
