Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A handbuilt terracotta Jalisco standing female, with a characteristically wide torso and elongated head, bedecked in a turban-like headdress, large round ear ornaments painted with white details, armbands, a pectoral, and a striped skirt of red, black and white hues. As was traditional, her breasts and buttocks are emphasized by the sculptor to as to highlight her fertility. Another fabulous detail on this piece is the striated tattoos or face paint adorning her visage. A wonderful example with nice manganese deposits on the surface!
