Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A polychrome seated female figure with legs folded beneath her skirt, holding a large kero or bowl in her left hand and placing her right hand over her abdominal region. She is extensively decorated with a knee-length skirt painted with a textile-inspired pattern of dotted diamond motifs, a seven-strand 'beaded' necklace, applied armbands on her right arm, painted bracelets on her left wrist, elaborate ear ornaments, a striated applied headband, and nose ring. Though topless, striated body paint in orange and white adorn her chest and back and black zigzag tattoos are particularly visible under her chin with some evidence on her torso as well. Size: 7.375" W x 12.25" H (18.7 cm x 31.1 cm)

This figure would have been placed in a shaft tomb, a burial method unique to the ancients of West Mexico; some shafts could be over 50 feet long, and several tombs containing human remains would branch off of the shaft. Figures like this fellow were placed facing outward around the edges of the tomb as if in conversation with or to provide for the human remains within; some scholars have theorized that this symbolically depicted a continuum between the worlds of the living and the dead, with communication occurring between them.
