Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A wonderful bichrome, white-on-red seated warrior figure wearing a garment or shield adorned with circular motifs over his right shoulder and holding a long club or staff detailed with a striated pattern. The figure peers directly ahead, and his visage is comprised of coffee bean shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and an open mouth as if speaking or chanting - all topped by a centrally-parted coiffure. Though mostly nude, the figure is also decorated with ear ornaments, a nose ring, and a white waist wrap or belt. An intriguing piece of visual culture from the ancients of West Mexico. Size: 6.5" W x 9.75" H (16.5 cm x 24.8 cm)

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields and Riverbend Gallery
