Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a hollow pottery figure of a kneeling female with her hands outstretched as if imploring the viewer to stop. Unlike many Jalisco figures, she wears no ornamentation or jewelry and has no clothing except a simple skirt. Her body is painted red, as is her hair. Her face with its long nose, open mouth, and wide eyes should not be thought of as representative of an individual, but rather as an artistic ideal. Figures like this one would have been placed into the tombs dug in shafts beneath Jalisco households where family members were periodically interred; archaeologists believe that they were placed around the edges of the tomb facing inward, as if in conversation with the dead. Size: 8-1/2" H x 6-1/2" W x 4" L (22 cm x 16-1/2 cm x 10 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private Hooper collection, CA, acquired via family descent
