Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, San Juanito, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A most unusual and skillfully modeled bichrome pottery animorphic effigy vessel, intriguingly presenting features of both a xolo dog and a turtle. Size: 7.5" L x 4.625" W x 3.75" H (19 cm x 11.7 cm x 9.5 cm)
While most collectors of Pre-Columbian pottery are familiar with puppies coming from the Colima region, ceramic canines from Jalisco are relatively rare. This standing pottery dog hails from San Juanito, featuring the beautiful bichrome finish characteristic of that region, and while similar to Colima dogs, there are distinct differences, most spectacularly the fact that it's body is covered with a turtle shell with a pointy tail emerging from the rear. The visage shows a characteristically elongated snout with strong defining lines, an open mouth revealing her hanging tongue, perky ears, wide coffee bean-shaped eyes, and the head encircled by a pointed crest mirroring the rim of the turtle shell and the vessel's spout. An atypical example presenting a whimiscal hybrid animorphic dog-turtle figure.
